Updated Classics: Modern Ankle Straps and Mary Janes

Mary Jane A lot of design houses went in a bold, power-bitch direction with their footwear this season. If you’re more of a sweet, old-fashioned girl, we’re guessing you were put off by many of this year’s clunky F/W fashion-week offerings, which don’t reflect your style. But if you’re still looking for something sweet to go with your demure demeanor, may we point you in the direction of a modest mini-trend that also received some attention from designers this season: sweet, vintagey Mary Janes and ankle strap pumps. Seen on the runway courtesy of everyone from Marni to Michael Kors, these old-school feminine styles offer girls next door a welcome respite from all the pumped-up biker boots and hooflike curved-heel pumps surrounding us these days. Mary Janes: These sweet classics are most familiar on the feet of little girls, but a sophisticated heel and a thin, delicate strap placed further down on the arch of the foot make them all grown up. Since Mary Janes conjure up visions of schoolgirls and bookworms, these are a great option for work if you do something a little nerdy. But this year’s sophisticated twists on the Mary Jane make it plenty cool enough for an evening out or any occasion if you feel it suits your style. Our favorites of the season? Our favorite example of this style is the crushed-velvet version from Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection. We also like D&G’s floral Mary Janes and the disco-flavored, black and gold ones from Marni.

Ankle Straps: Ankle strap pumps are more versatile than Mary Janes, and there’s a much wider variety of possible ankle-strap styles. Mostly, this season, we’ve seen dainty high-heeled, open toed sandals with ankle straps. But what nearly all these styles have in common is an emphasis on the delicate shape of the foot–the ankle strap is there to show off the slender shape of the ankle itself. This version from Nina Ricci makes us think of the pretty young things who starred in 1950’s movie musicals, and it’s that kind of youthful, coltish femininity that most of these shoes project.       Ankle Straps
