On Wednesday, September 8, 2010 the World of Manolo opened in Liberty, a London department store. The store within a store features an assortment of shoes designed by the legendary Manolo Blahnik and made from Liberty prints and fabrics.

“I think the Liberty archive should be made into a museum,” said Blahnik. “Children should be taken on compulsory trips to see it – it’s like a lesson in design. I love this store, I always have done. I’m completely mad for it.”

The exclusive collection offers a wide variety of styles – from printed flats to blue velvet ankle boots, to strappy gold sandals. It will be sold for just three and a half months in the London, Regent Street store and online at Liberty.co.uk.

Blahnik became a shoe designer by chance when he met former American Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland in Paris, where he was working as a set designer in the late 1960s. His first boutique was opened in London in 1973 and by the height of the Studio 54, disco era his shoes were all the rage.

Says the designer of his enduring popularity, “I don’t know why my shoes are so popular – I am always surprised and mystified by it. Perhaps it’s because they don’t have a set time period or ageing look to them.”
